Prudish Thoughts

So I was reading the paper and came across this picture. I know I run the risk of sounding like a prude...but are these shorts really necessary to play volleyball in? What were the baggy shorts of the 90's not doing that these shorts are? I've never really played volleyball so I guess I seriously want to know.

Some random thoughts about these shorts:

*This is now why every boy in the high school is suddenly interested in volleyball.

*I've seriously seen these underwear in Victoria's Secret.

*What happens to the girls who want to play volleyball but feel super uncomfortable sporting a pair of hot pants while doing it?

*I can maybe see a case for the track team....but volleyball?

I am gonna have to get over this by the time my girls play volleyball. But, by then they'll probably be playing naked....why even mess with the friction.

I've never really understood why the "bun-huggers" are used for volleyball. Lots of teams wore them when I played volleyball 10 and 15 years ago in high school and junior high. Fortunately for me, my teams wore a lot of biker shorts....same "tightness" but more coverage. I know I hate running in any kind-of baggy short, as they get in the way, so maybe it has something to do with that? I bet you can find out some information if you google it. :)

it has GOT to have something to do with getting guys onto the pep squad. There can be no other reason. I played volleyball and never got my hands caught in the "loose" shorts.

But then, I'm kinda a prude.

OK...I'm going to sound really un-prudish (which tends to go against my nature), but I've played volleyball in the super loose (and long) shorts in high school, and then played in spandex at Tabor. My vote is for the spandex...easier to move, not as hot, and in my opinion, pretty comfy! Although, I don't think my spandex were quite that short...

If my HS volleyball shorts would have been those, I would have never gone out! 1 more reason a girl will think she's fat. I guess I need to accept it and start buying D some VS undies when they are cheap. Heck they might be doing thongs when she's in HS! HA!

While you were writing this a friend of mine and I were sitting in my kitchen talking about bun huggers...and I was looking at the paper, too! It's interesting to me that most people look pretty decent in them. Not all, but most. I wonder what my chances are??? :)

Here is my two cents on the issue. One, I very much hope the HS my girls will attend will not be playing in these. Two,when I played at Tabor there was a time I was just sure these would be better shorts(not really shorts) to play in. I tried them at practice once in awhile...didn't notice any difference at all except that girls seem to pick out wedgies quite often. I love watching sand v-ball and V-ball at the Olympics...some amazing guys play. Those guys could probably whoop up on any girl out there and yet what are they wearing...real shorts, hmmm

I had a little rhyme that I used every game day in college when I had to wear the "bun-huggers"...
"The shorts don't affect the way I play and Andrew loves me anyway!" :)
Definitely wouldn't have been my choice but you do get use to them after awhile. (It also helps to get the right size and not the size you WANT to be!)

I played volleyball in bun huggers in college in the 1980s, and now my daughter runs for her college in XC and track in them. IMO most girls feel self conscious and fear wearing them initially, especially when boys are around, but provided everyone wears them, they soon overcome their nerves. Once that's done, I think they are more comfortable and professional than wearing shorts. So I don't see a problem with them, in fact I think they're better than tight spandex shorts which can be anatomically more revealing and less flattering to the female form.
